Research on surface integrity of titanium alloy TC17 machined by ball-end cutter

  • The surface integrity of titanium alloy TC17 machined by ball-end cutters was studied. According to the specific ball-end milling experiments and surface integrity test experiments, it is concluded that under the given experimental conditions, the surface roughness Ra increases with the increase of the feed per tooth fz, while the influence of cutting speed vc on surface roughness and surface micro-morphology is not significant. The surface of titanium alloy TC17 machined by ball-end cutters also showed a state of residual compressive stress, and the specific variation range was -250~-450 MPa; the micro hardness and residual compressive stress of the machined surface decrease with the increase of vc, and increase with the increase of fz, whose main reason is that as vc increases and fz decreases, the thickness of the plastically deformed layer on the milled surface gradually decreases.
